My Community with Singdaptive

Back in June of this year I started a new position with an online teaching platform called Singdaptive. The role has certainly challenged me to go outside of my comfort zone in a number of different ways however, the team of other teachers and support staff have been extremely supportive every step of the way. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to work with such an amazing group of individuals. So far it’s been an incredible journey filled with discovery, collaboration and inspiration.

I’d like to share my experience with all of you.

What is Singdaptive?

Singdaptive is an online music education platform that offers on-demand vocal coaching through the use of asynchronous exchange. In addition to personalized coaching from a team of instructors it also features an impressive content library of lessons and interactive courses with topics ranging from vocal technique, performance anxiety, music theory, audio technology and much more.

What makes Singdaptive Different?

You might be thinking, sure, there are all sorts of instructional videos and courses available online. Take youtube for instance which has a ton of content that’s completely free. There are also other online singing courses that you can take such as Thirty Day Singer, The Vocalist Studio, Masterclass and the list goes on. While these courses do offer some value, especially to someone who is a more advanced singer, you are essentially paying for a big pile of instructional videos. If two people both bought the same online course they would receive the exact same materials and content. What makes Singadptive different is that the experience is personalized to every individual user. Much like its competitors , Singdaptive also has a vast library of content but the difference is there’s a team of lead instructors who are hand picking what content would be most beneficial for that user in that given moment. Not only that but you also get to directly interact with your instructor through video and text exchanges.

This is where I come in. My role at Singdaptive is as a lead instructor!

Being a Lead Instructor

Can I just come out and say that I think I have one of the coolest jobs on the planet! First of all I get to teach others how to sing and help them discover their own authentic voice so that they can express themselves freely and easily through song. I have been doing this for several years with my own studio and now I get the chance to reach more people online. As a lead instructor I get to work with people 1 on 1 using Sindaptive’s vocal coaching platform called Exchangely. I author an exchange comprised of multiple tasks and submit it to the user. These tasks could include things such as: watching a specific lesson from the library, trying out a vocal exercise, listening to feedback from a previous exchange, singing through a song they are working on. Once the user receives their exchange they can progress through it as they please by completing the tasks laid out for them by responding with either video or text.

I’ll admit that I was a little skeptical at first as to how this was all going to work but I am amazed at how well the platform works. I was also very nervous about filming myself and making videos as I didn’t have much experience with that. Like anything though, it just takes practice and you get more comfortable over time.

I even had the chance to try it out from the students perspective and do an exchange with one of the other instructors. The thing I like most is that it’s on-demand, meaning you can work at your own pace. Life happens and we are all busy, so the flexibility is appreciated.

From the standpoint of a lead instructor I also really like that we get to recommend lessons, exercises, and content from other teachers. Very rarely does someone ever only study with one single teacher for their entire life. It’s important to get different opinions and points of view during the learning process. Instead of just one instructor you’re getting a whole team of instructors, each with their own area of expertise.

As a music teacher I also love the fact that I get to learn from this incredible team of instructors, especially the Lead Instructor team. We have meetings where we discuss important changes to the platform, keep each other updated on our exchanges and completely nerd out about vocal technique. There is a great sense of collaboration and community that occurs with the lead instructor team as well as the rest of the staff at Singdaptive. The feeling of community has been so important, especially because of the isolation of the last year. These people inspire me on a daily basis to continue to learn, develop my craft and push the boundaries of what traditional music education can look like.

My New Course

Part of working for Singdaptive is also creating lessons and courses for the library. I had the pleasure of creating a course about how to practice. We filmed the lessons back in July which feels like a lifetime ago now. It was nerve-wracking to say the least knowing that these lessons were going to be added to the library for everyone to see. Not to mention there are some lessons in there by some pretty big names so I also felt a little intimidated. I planned the lessons out meticulously, taking notes and developing a plan. The challenge was to not make it “too scripted” with the fear that it wouldn’t sound natural while still ensuring that I get all of my ideas across.

The day came and I arrived at Kevin and Kathy Alexander’s home to film the lessons. Both Kevin and Kathy were incredibly patient, helpful and supportive throughout the day of filming. I should also mention that Kaitie Sly did an excellent job editing and putting it all together. It must have been very time consuming to sift through all of the footage especially after having to do multiple takes. I am very pleased with how the course turned out and I’m already thinking about ideas for future lessons.

Work with me on Exchangely

If you’d like to learn more about Singdaptive and maybe even work with me on Exchangely then I highly reccomend you check it out. What have you got to loose? If you sign up for a free account and submit an exchange you will even receive some feedback about your singing from one of our lead instructors (which could even be me!).

Thank you for taking the time to read this post. It means a lot to me. If you would like to hear more from me then I encourage you to subscribe to my newsletter and follow me on social media.

I look forward to seeing you in the studio and online!

Sincerely,

Adam
